"Porter's Paintbrush" free lecture by Linda Lefko

Jul 1,2017 - Time: 4:00 pm - 6:30 pm
Following the annual meeting of the Center for Painted Wall Preservation, Linda C. Lefko, President of CPWP will present a free lecture open to the public on Saturday, July 1 at 4 pm “Porter’s Paintbrush,” at the Old Stone House Museum in Brownington, VT. Lefko will focus on Rufus Porter’s painting career by examining walls and portraits identified to be by him. A wine and cheese reception will follow the talk. At the annual meeting the CPWP Board will examine two sets of original wall murals. The first was painted by Rufus Porter circa 1835 and originally located at the Adams Female Academy in Derry, NH. These walls now permanently on exhibit at the Old Stone House Museum were recently chronicled in the CPWP “Plaster Bits” newsletter as a ‘fortunate turn of events.’  The 13 wall panels were purchased privately and extricated from the school, put into storage, offered at public auction but not sold, returned to storage and eventually found their way to another schoolhouse in Vermont and now placed at the Museum.  Their journey illustrates the danger plaster walls face when removed from their original setting.       The second mural, circa 1810, still in situ at the Littleton Inn, Littleton, NH was painted by an unknown artist.  The style of the second set of murals under study is completely different from that of Porter because they are in a primitive design versus the academic style of Porter.  The painted scenes give an eerily strange feeling of roadhouse events, folks bundled close together for sleep, the bawdy cry for another round and the stage pulling up on the road below – another place in time. This unknown itinerant artist also painted walls in the Hackett House, Thornton, NH.,which  are now in the collection of the American Folk Art Museum in New York City.     Donations to The Center for Painted Wall Preservation, a 501(c)(3) organization,  will go directly to fund efforts to preserve, research and extend the life of these significant folk art treasures.  Donations, no matter how small, can be sent to The Center for Painted Wall Preservation, P.O. Box 187, Hallowell, ME 04347 or donate online with credit card or PayPal at www.pwpcenter.org. For more information CPWP can be contacted through their website.
