SUMMARY:Vermont Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC): History\, Memories and Legacy
DESCRIPTION:On October 2nd starting at 12 PM\, the Old Stone House Museum & Historic Village will host author and historian Marty Podskoch\, who will give a Power Point presentation on the History of the Vermont Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) Camps. \nAt 12 PM there will be a Brown Bag Lunch followed by the 60 minute talk. Then at approximately 1:30 PM\, there will be an optional trip (in your own vehicle) through VT foliage to CCC Site S-55 in Willoughby State Forest! \nThis event is free to attend and will take place at the Grammar School building on our campus\, located at the base of Prospect Hill on Hinman Settler Road. Below you will find further directions and a map. \n  \nYou can also read the talk description written by Marty Podskoch: \nThe Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) began on March 31\, 1933 under President Roosevelt’s “New Deal” to relieve the poverty and unemployment of the Depression. CCC camps were set up in many VT towns\, state parks\, & forests. Workers built trails\, roads\, campsites\, & dams\, stocked fish\, built & maintained fire tower observer’s cabins & telephone lines\, fought fires\, & planted millions of trees. The CCC disbanded in 1942 due to the need for men in WW II. \nThere were approx. 30 CCC camps in or near these towns: Barre\, Bellows Falls. Bethel\, Brunswick\, Burke\, Charlotte\, Colchester\, Danby\, East Barre\, East Burke\, Elmore\, Groton\, Ludlow\, Marshfield\, Mendon\, Middlesex\, Milton\, Montpelier\, Moscow/Stowe\, Northfield\, North Shrewsbury\, North Thetford\, Peru\, Plymouth\, Proctorsville\, Poultney\, Rickers Mills\, Rochester\, St. Albans\, Sharon\, Sutton\, Underhill Center\, Waterbury\, Weston\, Wilmington\, and Windsor. \nMarty Podskoch is a retired teacher and the author of eleven books: Adirondack Civilian Conservation Corps Camps: Their History\, Memories and Legacy of the CCC; Fire Towers of the Catskills: Their History and Lore\, Adirondack Fire Towers: Their History and Lore\, the Southern Districts; Adirondack Fire Towers: Their History and Lore\, the Northern Districts\, Adirondack Stories: Historical Sketches; 101 More Adirondack Stories: Historical Sketches; The Adirondack 102 Club: Your Passport & Guide to the North Country\, Connectict CCC Camps\, Connecticut 169 Club: Your Passport & Guide to Exploring CT\, Rhode Island CCC Camps and Rhode Island 39 Club. He also writes a weekly column called “Adirondack Stories\,” in five Adirondack newspapers. \nHe is presently gathering information for future books on the approx. 30 camps in VT and the 70+ CCC camps in MA. Podskoch is keenly interested in meeting individuals who may have CCC stories and photos to contribute to these books.
