In our second “Glimpse of the Past” with The Barton Chronicle, we presented a photo showing the Town of Orleans, Vermont Concert Band during the town’s 1920 Centennial Celebration. This photograph was taken by noted Orleans photographer Mack Derrick and published by his Orleans based studio. Identified in the photo are Harold Domina, middle row 2nd from the left, Herbert Bullard, middle row sixth from the right, and Mike Leavitt, back row fourth from the right.
The bicentennial of Orleans passed seemingly unnoticed this year amidst the Covid19 pandemic. In 1820, Roger Enos purchased land from Ira H. Allen, the son of Ira Allen and nephew of Ethan Allen. This was named Barton Landing and was a place where boats could be loaded for transportation down the Barton River to Lake Memphremagog. In 1908, to avoid confusion between railroad stations, the village name was changed to Orleans by popular vote.
