For our March exhibit in our 2020-2021 off season series, we are celebrating Women’s History Month and recognizing Mercy Ladd Twilight, the wife of Brownington educator African American Alexander Lucius Twilight. Beyond knowing that she is the wife of the beloved school master, many are not familiar with the details of Mrs. Twilight’s life but she is not without her own accomplishments. Although many of the decisions that determined her life were Mr. Twilight’s, it is difficult to believe that he made his choices without the support of Mrs. Twilight who later in life proved to be a resourceful and independent woman.
This exhibit is a timeline following the trajectory of Mrs. Twilight’s life using key events with known dates and facts. Gaps are filled in by gleaning information from primary sources or from other character’s in her life. In some cases, assumptions can be made regarding Mrs. Twilight’s relationship with the Grammar School students, her experience while the Twilight’s life in Quebec and her relationship with the local community.
Be sure to check back in April for the final exhibit in our off-season series!
