April Online Exhibit: Remembering the Flood of 1927

April 23, 2021
View of Downtown Orleans during the flood.

The conclusion of our Winter Online Exhibit Series recognizes Earth Month and shares the history of one of the worst weather events faced by the region in the last one hundred years: The Flood of 1927.

While the month of April may be known for its rain shower (or this year’s snow showers) most major flood events take place later in the year, often in the fall. The Flood of 1927 began on November 2, 1927 and, while it only lasted a few days, it caused millions of dollars worth of damage.

This exhibit walks you through the key points of the Flood of 1927, draws comparisons to other historic flood events in Vermont and discusses changes in rainfall patterns of the region as they related to climate change.
