Four our fifth “Glimpse of the Past” with The Barton Chronicle, hunting season was well underway. We shared rare images of the C.S. Phillips Company of Glover, Vermont the renowned taxidermy shop of Chester Scott Phillips.
Born in Glover in 1854, Chester started a taxidermy business that would employ many men and propel Chester into fame as New England’s leading taxidermist. He purchased an undertaking and furniture business from Elmer Dwinell and opened a taxidermy and gunsmithing business. Chester died at age 89 in 1943 but the business continued for another forty years run by the Wilson, Leland, and Brooks families. His nephew, Clarence Leo Phillips, also had a taxidermy business in Glover.
These rare photographs came to the museum as a gift of the late Ken Barber and show the original building that was damaged during the 1927 flood, as well as a sampling of published photographs of Chester’s work.
