What’s the latest winter addition to the Old Stone House Museum & Historic Village? A snow labyrinth! Friend of the museum, Nancy Riege, laid out a labyrinth next to the Orleans County Grammar School. If you have the chance to peer down at her work from the upstairs of the school, you’ll see that the labyrinth is perfectly circular, with a heart right at the center.
Nancy doesn’t use any kind of guide or tools to make her labyrinths so perfect except the powers of her own mind and body. She says that it’s a form of muscle memory that helps her freely create labyrinths in the snow. So put on your snowshoes and come on over to the museum! You can see if you can find the center of our labyrinth. The more you enjoy the labyrinth, the more other people can too. Your experiences with it will help pack down the snow and ensure that the paths are not covered by wind or storms.
We encourage you to lay down your own paths, too! The historic village is open to all snowshoers and skiers. We’ve seen plenty of ski tracks crisscrossing the grounds and, after this fresh snowstorm, we hope to see some more! Take a pass around the Twilight Educational Trail or through the fields. Our campus is a great place to spot birds and other winter wildlife.
